Dutch Light Study Tour

Dutch Light Study Tour - 7th & 8th March 2012

The Netherlands has seen many significant developments in Next Generation Access, particularly fibre to the home.

On the 7th and 8th March INCA and Next Gen Events organised a study tour in the Netherlands to find out more about Dutch next generation access projects. Participants included representatives from Fujitsu Telecom, City Fibre Holdings, KC -­‐ part of the KCom Group, formerly Kingston Communications, fibre manufacturers Prysmian and Rala, the Swedish fibre company.

This visit, supported by Prysmian Group and NG Events Ltd took in the Onsnet Nuenen Fibre project, a tour of the Prysmian Fibre Plant, Reggefiber, van Gelder Telecom FTTH project in Berkel en Rodenrijs and other Next Generation projects.

Overall participants found the study tour very useful learning about:

  • Reggefiber’s astonishing success in rolling out FTTH networks to 951,000 homes in the Netherlands
  • The OpenNet model being tranferred from Sweden to the Netherlands and elsewhere
  • OnsNet Nuenen’s success and plans for connecting urban and rural communities to fibre
  • How glass fibre is made with a factory visit organised by Prysmian in Eindhoven
  • KC’s early success in rolling out FTTH in Hull
  • An early public sector project in Rotterdam that has struggled to get service providers
  • Rala’s plans to move beyond its Swedish base supplying passive infrastructure and management of fibre projects
  • Fujitsu Telecom’s plans for extending coverage under the BDUK programme
  • How civil engineering firm Van Gelder reduces costs and increases consumer take-­‐up on ftth projects
