Workshop streams and event topics:

  • Making sense of the cuts - in the light of recent announcements on the economy and public spending - what will this mean for NGA? How does the new agency Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) plan to make an impact?

  • Big Society Broadband - what do we need to do to in our communities to encourage faster roll out of better broadband services? Learn from some of the leading practitioners about how their projects evolved and discuss what needs to happen to scale up these efforts to tackle broadband notspots and the 'Final Third' that commercial providers find too challenging to invest in. How can these approaches encourage future-proofed investment in 'fibre to the premises' in our towns, cities and more rural areas?

  • The Changing Regional Economic Development Picture - with the emergence of Local Enterprise Partnerships (and the potential demise of the RDAs); we discuss the changing nature of regional/local economic development and regeneration and how this might impact NGA investments. What sort of public/private/community partnerships are likely to offer the best results for local areas?

  • Infrastructure sharing for effective NGA/overcoming barriers to investment - how can sharing infrastructure - ducts, poles, electricity pylons - reduce the cost of deployment, and what needs to happen to make it a reality? Can we do something about the business rates 'tax on fibre' that acts as a disincentive to investment?

  • Digital inclusion - is IT really happening for all? What are community broadband projects doing to encourage the 'Race Online'?

  • Digital Birmingham - find out what’s happening in this vibrant city

  • Leaping State Aid Fences - from project leaders who have experience of dealing with State Aid issues, we draw together the strands that make up a successful strategy to tackle this complex area.

  • Getting the most out of public sector networks - how can public networks in your area help you to deliver Next Generation Broadband and save you money?

  • Where national policy meets localism - how to ensure that your NGA project on the ground gets the best deal from BDUK

  • Mobile and wireless developments in NGA - we will discuss the rapid pace of developments in the mobile and wireless sphere
